Problems Involving Boat Moving Downstream

In these type of situations, while calculating downstream speed we will add the speed of river to the speed of boat because the river is pushing the boat downwards and the boat is also moving in the downward direction. This means that the speed of the river is increasing the speed of the boat.

Let the speed of a boat ( or a body) in still water be x km/h and that of stream be y km/h, then

  • Speed of boat upstream = ( x + y) km/h
  • Illustration: A boat goes 9 km in 1 h in still water. it takes one third the time in covering the same distance in the direction of the current. Find the speed of the current.

    A. 15 Km/h          B. 16 Km/h          C.  18 Km/h           D. None of these

    Answer: C

    Solution:  Speed of boat instill water = 9 km/h

     As it takes one third the time in covering the same distance in the direction of the current

    Speed in the direction of the current

     = 9 X 3 = 27 Km/h
